Centroid, Section Properties and Area Moments of Inertia

Example: Centroid and moment of inertia - T Shape:
Before stresses in the beam can be computed, two important properties related to the shape of the cross section must be calculated:
  • The location of the centroidal axis
  • The moment of inertia of the cross section about its centroidal axis

Centroid and Area Moments of Inertia calculation in NX & AutoCAD:
This tutorial is how to find the Centroid and Area moments of inertia in NX.

Section Properties Using AutoCAD:

1. Create regions by using Region command.

2. Carry out MassProp command to find the Centroid

3. Move the UCS coordinate position according to the Centroid point. The new position is the (0,0) new position of the UCS.

4. Again carry out MassProp command now the Centroid is (0,0)
